Holiday Dining Recommendations

Headed to a holiday show or festive display? You're going to need some fuel to endure the crowds and the cold weather. Here are a few recommendations on where to get a bite before or after the event:

A Christmas Carol
Forget the Cratchit family's gifted turkey and hit up the Guthrie Theater's seafood restaurant, Sea Change, to see why chef Jamie Malone and pastry chef Niki Francioli have earned a spot among the city's up-and-coming culinary pros.

British Arrows Awards
The Walker Art Center's annual ad awards have inspired its Gather restaurant to transform into the Walker Pub during the show's month-long run. Chef Josh Brown offers his take on fish and chips, bangers and mash, Scotch eggs, sticky toffee pudding, and more. The pub will be open for dinner Thursday through Saturday, from 5-9 p.m. through December 29. The Garden Cafe in the Walker lobby will also offer British snacks, plus ales, ciders, and thematic cocktails and will stay open until a half-hour after the start of each evening's final screening.

Holidazzle
Avoid the crowds on Nicollet Mall and walk half a block to Devil's Advocate for kid-pleasing meatballs and—for adults—one of downtown's best craft beer lists (40 taps!).

Macy's 8th Floor
Head up four flights to Macy's Oak Grill, whose wood-lined, fireplace-warmed 1940s-era dining room offers a surprisingly delicious hamburger.

The Nutcracker
Hit up Ristoranti Luci or Luci Ancora for excellent Italian if you prefer the O'Shaughnessy's classic ballet, or, if you're seeing Loyce Houlton’s Nutcracker Fantasy at the Cowles Center, try the new under-the-radar Indian joint, the Copper Pot, for familar standbys (saag paneer) and hard-to-find luxuries (tellicherry duck).

Phalen Park Light Display
Don't get to Dayton's Bluff often? Here's your excuse to get to the Strip Club for one of chef J.D. Fratske's grass-fed steaks and a handcrafted cocktail from one of the city's best bartenders, Dan Oskey.

White Christmas and A Christmas Story
If you're headed to the Heights theater, try the Korean bibimbap at Dong Yang in nearby Hilltop. Pair your show at the Riverview theater with a glass of wine at the Riverview Wine Bar across the street.
