Savvy Mom: The Hideout Has Gray Duck Chai and So Much More

I’m not sure it’s an exaggeration to say that coffee shops saved my life. My first winter staying at home with a toddler, my jaunts to the coffee shop were often the only time I got out of the house. As my kids got older, I’ve dragged them to pretty much every coffee shop in and around the Twin Cities. I have a mental map of which shop is where, and what their specialty is. I’m always happy to find someplace new and good, but for some reason it took us a while to get around to checking out The Hideout at 33rd and Central in Northeast Minneapolis.

The Hideout takes the place of Alm, and Lily’s before it. My fingers are crossed for a successful stay, because their food menu goes well beyond the average coffee shop in length and creativity. They’re also one of the growing number of places that offer Gray Duck Chai, a locally crafted and blended brew. You can drink the chai, or you can order the waffle with chai whipped cream. Just writing that makes me want to go back RIGHT NOW.

The day we visited we had hot chocolate, chai, and cider to drink. The menu has breakfast, salad, and sandwich options, plus a range of in-house baked goods. I got the Midnight Sandwich, with chips on the side AND on the sandwich. The boys got a waffle and egg dish, which they enjoyed while they perused the comics.

The Hideout connects to the Hill Valley Boutique vintage shop, which I would have checked out had I been on my own, and not with excitable, easily distracted boys. So I’ll be making a return trip, to check out the boutique and to try more of The Hideout’s menu. And from the looks of things, it’s going to earn a spot in our regular rotation.
