The pun (and the notion of name-brand vegetables) may be hard to stomach, but this corn isn’t. Amaize, a new variety of sweet corn from Lunds and Byerly’s, has been 40 years in the works, and it’s arrived just in time for summer.

Minnesotans have always harbored a deep appreciation of homegrown sweet corn—we eat around 200,000 cobs during the MN State Fair alone! The locally grown corn is non-GMO and bred with traditional hybridization techniques, selected to make the kernels crisp and juicy. Best of all, it’s designed to stay crunchy when cooked—ideal for those those with a perpetual tendency to forget how long the corn’s been boiling on the stove.

I took a few cobs home from the batch sent over by Lunds & Byerly’s to taste for myself. After a requisite boiling period and the unfortunate realization that my kitchen was devoid of butter, I was thrilled to bite into a cob and discover that Amaize has enough juicy sweetness to stand all on its own. It doesn’t matter if you’re grilling out with every spice and marinade at the ready, or if you’re out of butter and exercising your skills as a microwave chef; Amaize is worth checking out.
