Read and Eat with Slow Food Minnesota
Potluck season has arrived, and curling-up-in-a-cozy-corner-with-a-good-book season is on the horizon. If you’re busy squirreling away books and slow cooker recipes, Slow Food Minnesota (a non profit that “provides events and projects for people who love food and care about the environment”) has a couple of upcoming opportunities for you to chow down, meet a local food author, and even get your books signed.
Slow Food Minnesota is holding its third annual Writers’ Night at 4 p.m. on October 21 at Lauderdale City Hall. Described as “readings, book signings, conviviality, and food,” attendees are being asked to bring a dish for a potluck, and Slow Food will provide a dish related to each book (like a corn pudding in reference to Turn Here Sweet Corn).
This year's Writers’ Night guests are:
- Tricia Cornell, Eat More Vegetables
- Atina Diffley, Turn Here Sweet Corn
- Beth Dooley, The Northern Heartland Kitchen
Tickets are $10 for members of Slow Food and $15 for non-members. Children 12 and under are free.
An Evening with Lynne Rossetto Kasper
Join Slow Food Minnesota and the award-winning host of The Splendid Table, Lynne Rossetto Kasper (pictured above), for a dinner based on recipes from Rossetto Kasper’s new book, The Splendid Table’s How to Eat Weekends at 6 p.m. on November 1 at the Campus Club on the U of M St. Paul Campus. Tickets are $45 for Slow Food members and $55 for non-members, and include dinner prepared by Beth Jones, plus a glass of wine. Purchase the book while you’re there, and get it autographed.
For kicks, check out my all-time favorite episode of “In Julia’s Kitchen with Master Chefs.” In this episode, Lynne Rossetto Kasper shows us how to prepare a perfect leg of lamb. I love this episode for so many reasons, but most of all, because Rossetto Kasper instructs with such proficiency, and makes sense of simple things—like why it’s important to blanch orange zest.
