Mad for Plaid

American Sportswear gets a second life at Greenwich Vintage

“Whatever smells old and musty, Mike brings it home like a puppy,” Tamas “Zen” Pomazi says of  picker “Mustache” Mike Ader. They’re two-thirds of Greenwich Vintage, with CFO Maximillian Miller.

The trio sells “regenerated, recrafted, American” apparel, including Pendleton. Also in the mix: Woolrich, Bemidji and Faribault wool, and Winona Knits, often rare or one-of-a-kinds.

The shop is a guys-guy basement hidey-hole, and requires a phone call and an escorted walk to enter. Once inside, men get zeroed-in shopping advice. “Men had a style back in the ’40s, ’50s, ’60s,” Zen says. “When guys get here, a light bulb goes off.”

Zen holds pieces  from the sales floor until they are restored, including vintage wingtips. “We don’t put schmata on the hangers,” he says.

“We want to let men be men,” says Mustache Mike, who is also a barber. “We’re gonna recreate traditions.”
