Dysfunctional Politics/Authentic Lives

Event Date/Time

10:00 am until 12:00 pm

Description

Dysfunctional Politics/Authentic Lives

Guest Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer will lead a conversation about what can be done to counter the mean-spirited, dysfunctional political system our country has wrought. He believes that although the trajectories of present problems are bleak, we have immense and unprecedented opportunities to act magnificently and achieve soft landings. Jack is interested in the question of how we can live marvelously even with all the destruction, violence, and uncertainty in the world today. He believes that our stirring for an authentic life needs to be connected to our stirring for a better world. With him, we will explore, interactively, how to involve ourselves in building a better world without getting mired in despair, cynicism or mudslinging.

Jack Nelson-PallmeyerM.Div. assistant professor of justice and peace studies at St. Thomas, is a nationally recognized teacher, writer, public speaker, and activist committed to nonviolent social change. He has focused his life and work on showing linkages between faith and critical political, economic, and social issues. He has written extensively on issues of hunger, poverty, U.S. foreign policy, the historical Jesus, and problems of God and violence. He has been involved in organizations that promote social justice such as  the Politics of Food Program with Clergy & Laity Concerned and the Hunger and Justice Project for the American Lutheran Church. Jack holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
