Parties, weddings, barbecues, picnics, and soirees seem more invigorating during the summer. One great venue to consider for such occasions is the event space at the Calhoun Beach Club, which D’Amico and Partners, under the talented direction of Richard D’Amico, created for the building. I love the sleek South-Beach look, the magnificent view of Lake Calhoun, and the three sophisticated dinning room areas.

Some of the glitzy gatherings I’ve enjoyed—including those at Tiffany & Co. in the Galleria in Edina and JB Hudson on Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis—have been catered by Rodney Davis’s new Lutrec Catering company (lutreccatering.com, 612-205-4734). Or how about hosting an Indonesian, Indian, or Sri Lanken–curry party in your own home catered by chef Heather Jansz? She can warm up even the coolest days of summer (heatherjansz.com, 612-250-6556).

Midtown Global Market has expanded. Jakeeno’s, Holy Land, and Farm in the Market have all doubled their spaces. Jade, a new sit-down restaurant at the market, is serving a full menu of seafood and noodle dishes, and the Salty Tart pastry shop, owned by award-winning pastry chef Michelle Gayer-Nicholson, is up and running.

I found a gem of a spot on Eat Street called Peninsula Malaysian Cuisine (2608 Nicollet Avenue, 612-871-8282), where Ken Li and his family cook amazing roti and incredible satay beef, chicken, or tofu, with authentic spicy peanut dipping sauce.
