Living Agelessly: A Guide to Your Golden Years

Retirement is about enjoying life your way—exploring interests, seeking out new challenges and opportunities, and realizing your dreams. It’s about the life you’ve worked so hard to deserve, and a big part of that life is finding the perfect place to live.

Living Agelessly: A Guide to Your Golden Years

HERITAGE OF EDINA

An essential part of the Edina community for nearly 50 years, Heritage of Edina has gained a reputation as an affordable, elegant, and welcoming senior community. With living options ranging from independent living to memory care, residents are able to age in place, meaning they don’t have to move should their health decline. They can stay in a familiar setting, surrounded by beloved friends and the staff they have grown to know and love.

“People need to feel a sense of community,” says CEO Maria Field, whose husband Wayne opened Heritage of Edina in 1960. “To start all over again in a strange place can be a frightening and lonely experience.”
There is a definite sense of community at Heritage of Edina.

The residents quickly become friends and the staff truly cares about the residents.

The difference at Heritage of Edina is not what the employees do that sets them apart, Field says, but the spirit with which they do it. The employees, many of whom have served the Heritage community for more than 30 years, are genuine, helpful, and friendly. They wear color-coded uniforms so that all residents can easily identify them when they see them. It’s a safety issues—so that residents can ask for help if needed—and it’s a matter
of respect.

“We dress for the residents in a respectful manner because we’re in their home,” Field explains.

In addition to the first-rate staff, the quiet and safe Edina location features private walkways between buildings, award-winning gardens and estate grounds complete with walking paths, sculptures, fountains, and flowering plants and a convenient location just minutes from shops, restaurants, Southdale Shopping Center, Fairview Southdale Hospital, and Edina Care Center.

Other amenities include over 350 monthly activities, a medi-control program (a specialized medicine management program), daily socials, full-service housekeeping, laundry, a personal limousine service for outings (oftentimes driven by Maria Field herself), and registered nurses, home health aides, and licensed nurse practitioners staffing the facility 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

TRILLIUM WOODS

You wake up in your garden home or apartment, check the weather and plan your day. Maybe you’ll go for a bike ride, walk down the hall and get a massage, or do a few laps in the indoor swimming pool. In the afternoon, your options are endless. Have lunch with friends before taking an art class, doing some gardening or checking out a book from the library. Later that night, meet up with friends at the cocktail lounge. And not once will you have to
get in your car and drive somewhere.

This is what your retirement could be like at Trillium Woods, a new continuing care community in development on 46 acres west of 494 and south of County Road 47 in Plymouth.

“It’s like a cruise ship on land, without the waves,” jokes Katie Kubinski, Trillium Woods marketing director. “The developers have thought of everything.”

“Everything” includes 24-hour emergency response by licensed health care professionals (offering a wide range of on-site assisted living and health care from short-term recuperative care to long-term skilled nursing and memory care), weekly housekeeping services, a preferred choice dining program including a restaurant, café, cocktail lounge, and carry-out dining, a highly trained executive chef and culinary staff preparing fresh, healthy meals, fun, stimulating social events and activities both on and off-campus, relaxing spa and massage therapy services, an on-campus salon and a bank. There will be an auditorium, a library, a creative arts studio, aerobics and strength training areas, fireside lounge, private dining room, and large indoor swimming pool.

The location, too, is fit for a king and queen. The site features scenic hillsides, wetlands, forested areas, and Lakes Pomerleau and Camelot. Begin Oaks Golf Course is nearby. Walking and biking paths link with the Three Rivers Park District and Northwest Greenway Trail systems. The community is less than six miles from the new Maple Grove Hospital (set to open in the fall of 2009) and within close proximity of restaurants and shops.

Beyond the amenities, what makes Trillium Woods unique is the peace of mind, knowing that there’s a budgeted plan in place for any of life’s surprises and having access to private rooms in the new health care center if needed. “This plan will give residents confidence in knowing that they are living in a comfortable environment while securing access to healthy lifestyle choices and quality on-site health care while preserving their assets,” Kubinski says. “This assures control over a future that will be unpredictable.”

The fact that Trillium Woods is a life care community—one of only two in the state—means that monthly expenditures are combined into one payment, regardless of the level of care a resident needs. There will be also be a full continuum of care on campus, including home health care.

“You can plan ahead and budget appropriately for long-term health care costs,” Kubinski says. “You’re saving yourself stress and you’re saving your kids stress. It’s peace of mind for everyone.”

She doesn’t just talk the talk, either.

“I have been working with seniors for 20 years,” Kubinski says. “There truly is nothing like Trillium Woods in the state of Minnesota. Life Care Services is bringing a wonderful opportunity to our seniors.”

Phase one—including 209 residences and 12 different floor plans ranging from one to two bedroom units, each with a balcony or patio—is anticipated to be finished by 2012. Developers are also pursuing LEED certification, a highly regarded benchmark for environmentally-friendly design.
