Today is the longest day of the year, which means plenty of extra time to celebrate summer! Put those 15 hours of daylight to good use and head to the Summer Solstice Celebration at Franconia Sculpture Park. Starting at 5:30, sink your teeth into some good eats ($10 suggested donation for brats, veggie burgers, potato salad, watermelon) while rubbing elbows with the artists showing their work.
A landmine of creativity, Franconia is not your typical sculpture park. Look for pieces with motion-censored LED lights, periscopes, or laser beams scattered around the 20-acre park. Also, word to the wise: the closer you get to the art, the better. In fact, visitors are allowed—nay, encouraged—to touch, climb on, and walk through anything they please. Be sure not to miss “Playstation,” a massive, magical, steel and wood structure that looks like it was pulled from a child’s imagination.
Cap off the day by lounging in front of a bonfire (weather permitting), or, if you feel so inclined, lace up your dancing shoes: rumor has it the artists often throw a dance party, disco ball and all. Sounds like a good way to welcome summer to us.
