The List
ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN DOCTORS made Minnesota Monthly’s first-ever Top Doctors for Women list. Here’s how they were chosen.
In November 2005 Minnesota Monthly sent surveys to more than 5,500 doctors in the seven-county Twin Cities region, asking them to recommend the best doctors for women in more than 20 medical specialties. The mailing list for the survey was obtained from the nonprofit Minnesota Medical Association, which regularly updates a database of its members and potential members with information about Minnesota doctors provided by the American Medical Association, the state of Minnesota, and other sources.
Recipients were asked to nominate up to three physicians in each specialty, based on the same criteria they would use to make recommendations to a female family member, friend, or loved one. The instructions on the survey noted that Minnesota Monthly was not specifically seeking referrals for female doctors; rather, the editors were looking for the names of doctors (male or female) who are attuned to the specific needs of female patients.
The list of specialties is not comprehensive. Instead, the survey sought to highlight specialties that are often of interest to women.
To be included among Minnesota Monthly’s Top Doctors for Women, a physician had to receive enough votes from his or her peers to rank in the top 10 percent of all the physicians nominated. (The most nominations went to menopause specialist June LaValleur—with 35 votes.) It should be noted, however, that more than 1,400 doctors were named as “tops” by their peers—an indication that the Twin Cities is brimming with medical practitioners capable of offering exceptional and noteworthy care for women.
