When March winds blow, I love a hot bowl of soup. Carla Snyder and Meredith Deeds have just what we need with their new 300 Sensational Soups cookbook. The Vidalia onion soup and the roasted tomato with grilled cheese croutons are two of my favorites.

The coal-fired pizza that chef/owner Jordon Smith is firing up at his new Black Sheep Pizza (600 Washington Ave. N., Minneapolis, 612-342-2625) is a delicious treat. Do try the hot salami and dried chili-pepper pizza, as well as their great salads.

This is a good year to enter the Pillsbury Bake-Off for the prize of $1 million. For rules, visit bakeoff.com; recipes are due by April 20.

Get a free cup of coffee on Mondays with any pastry or breakfast item, and free soda and chips with sandwiches on Wednesdays at the Franklin Street Bakery (1020 E. Franklin Ave., Minneapolis, 612-879-5730). Or try the breakfasts at My Burger (Quebec Skyway, Sixth St. and Marquette Ave., Minneapolis) from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. weekdays. Get two eggs, any style, hash browns, toast, sausage, or State Fair–big bacon for $3.65. Plus, their burgers, fries, and malts are super for lunch, too.

Crispin (crispinoverice.com), a natural hard apple cider is the new creation of local drink maker, Joe Heron, the man behind the airforce Nutrisodas. Try one of three varieties over ice to toast any occasion.

Sue Zelickson is host of WCCO Radio’s Food for Thought.
