What to Drink Now

> Cline Cashmere GSM

With the days growing short and the prospect of a long winter staring you in the face, you may be inclined to don a favorite sweater, curl up with a good book, and hibernate until spring. Alternatively, you could pay a visit to the Wine Thief, a cozy little shop just down the street from Macalester College in St. Paul, where you can pick up a bottle of Cline Cashmere and peruse co-owner Katrina Wentzel’s clever and informative descriptions of each of the carefully selected wines.

Cashmere, a favorite of Paul Wentzel (Katrina’s marital and business partner), is a winning example of what is known as a GSM: a red blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. A traditional combination in the Rhône region of France, it’s become popular in Australia, and is a natural for Cline Cellars, a founding member of California’s “Rhône Rangers” fraternity. The flavors of the three grape varieties knit together in a seamlessly satisfying wine that will provide warm comfort in the cold days ahead.

Cline Cashmere 2007, $14.99, the Wine Thief, 1787 St. Clair Ave., St. Paul, 651-698-9463
