Recognized for award-winning artists and cutting-edge theater, Penumbra Theatre takes pride in representing the African American experience throughout the country’s past and present, looking toward the future. “This season’s lineup explores change, the notion of progress, and the role of the individual and collective stories in the creation of history,” says Lou Bellamy, founder and artistic director.

PASSION, LAUGHTER, & SONG

On the Penumbra stage from October 1 – 25 is the regional premiere of Radio Golf, by August Wilson, offering a timely look at race and American politics. From December 3 – 27, don’t miss Black Nativity: A Season for Change, by T. Mychael Rambo and Lou Bellamy, a holiday gospel musical celebrating the bonds of family, the power of faith, and the gift of love. The regional premiere of Black Pearl Sings! by Frank Higgins, from February 18 – March 14, reveals authentic slave songs of the American South through Pearl, an incarcerated woman with a silky voice and a steely spirit. Rounding out the season from April 29 – May 23 is the world premiere of Two Old Black Guys Just Sitting Around Talking, by Gus Edwards, revolving around two men who can’t stand each other yet find their lives intertwined in ways they never imagined.
