Sue Z.'s Finds

Sue Z.'s Finds

The rainbow ice cream stands at the Minnesota State Fair, which date back to 1930 and are operated by the Davis family, always bring back many taste and teenage-job memories. The Davis’ recent “lick-off“ contest resulted in more than 700 suggestions, and yielded a new flavor called Home Town Team. Try it this month at the fair.

Lori Turner’s Elle-Tee spreadable cheese creations include blue cheese with date jam and roasted hazelnuts, as well as goat cheese with peppadews, black olives, and roasted garlic. Her new cold-pack Cheddar with sun-dried tomatoes, green onions, and pine nuts is fabulous spread on burger buns. Elle-Tee cheese tortas are sold at Kowalski’s, Alexis Bailly Vineyard, and Bin Wine Bar.

Carole Garrigos and Keri Sprau of Road Kill (Food to Die For) have created savory Posh-Tarts with flaky pastry and gourmet fillings, including figs, Manchego, and prosciutto; potato, white Cheddar, and bacon; and pesto-roasted tomato and goat cheese, and sell them at the New Hope Farmers’ Market (4300 Xylon Ave., New Hope) Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October.

And check out the tent-covered stalls at the delightful site for the new Centennial Lakes Farmers’ Market (7499 France Ave. S., Edina), where you’ll find Andrea Pessis’s giant chocolate Groveland Confections, the Untiedt family’s freshly picked fruits and vegetables, Peter’s Pumpkins & Carmen’s Corn, and more, every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. until the end of September.

Sue Zelickson is the former host of WCCO Radio’s Food for Thought.
