Ask the Expert: What is Universal Design?

In the past, those with growing limitations either moved in with relatives or into assisted living or nursing homes as they became more dependent. Universal design allows people to stay in their own homes as long as possible—regardless of age or ability.

Universal design features can make homes comfortable in the long-term, without sacrificing style. Incorporate a handheld shower head in the bathroom, a comfort-height (chair height) toilet, grab bars and rails, an adjustable body spray to soothe aching muscles, a steam option to moisturize dry skin (a great stress reliever!), touchless wave technology instead of a traditional flush lever, or a Kohler toilet seat with a built-in nightlight that runs on batteries.

In the kitchen, opt for induction cooktops that won’t turn on without a pot on the burner, anti-scald faucets, easy roll-out drawers, faucets that operate by touch, and lower cabinets and countertops.
