Color of the Year: Turquoise

Well, this is exciting: The Pantone Color of the Year for 2010 is turquoise. You think I’m being facetious—not at all. I’m just glad the rest of the world is catching up with me. I LOVE almost any shade of turquoise, from that deep, Caribbean-water jewel tone (on one wall of a bathroom in my house for an eye-opening shot of color on a cold winter morning) to the blue-green of heavenly Teco pottery to that shimmery translucent pale aqua of Depression glass.

Here’s Pantone’s reasoning: “Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.” Exactly. I couldn’t agree more.

Pantone, of course, has called dibs on this year’s shade: It’s officially Pantone 15-5519 Turquoise. But I see no reason to let that stop me from relishing every shade of luminous, water-evoking turquoise and blue and green and assorted combinations thereof.
