Curb Appeal with Attitude

If you’ve ever wanted an 18-foot-high squid or buffalo spray-painted on the side of your house, here’s your chance. Acclaimed Minneapolis stenciler John Grider (who works under the name Broken Crow) has put a call out on www.brokencrow.com for home and business owners with outdoor walls to spare. The former City Pages’ Artist of the Year—his best-known painting is the massive billy goat on the side of Salon Stella in Northeast—has painted three houses in Minneapolis thus far. He’ll be painting a fourth in London this month. It takes Grider just 4 hours to apply the (very permanent) spray paint, but more than a week to cut the massive stenciling panels. Go to Wong’s photos on Flickr to see Grider in action, painting the electric blue cheetah above on the home of Andrew Wong, a 25-year-old computer technician who lives near 19th and Fillmore.
