Northrop at the University of Minnesota’s 2009-10 music and dance season is refreshingly imaginative, thanks—in large part—to the artistic genius of Ben Johnson, the new director of concerts and lectures.
The jazz series opens with Larry Ochs Sachs and Drumming Core, followed by the Afro-Cuban percussion sounds of the Dafnis Prieto Sextet; premier violinist Regina Carter’s Reverse Thread; Panamanian jazz pianist Danilo Perez & Friends; and the talented Swedish Radio Choir, dubbed by many as one of the world’s best choirs. The season closes with a special side project, “The Happiness Project,” by Broken Social Scene founder Charles Spearin. This year’s music program includes partnerships with the Walker Art Center, the Whole Music Club, the Southern Theater, and Jazz is Now!
“Our goal is to raise the bar,” Johnson says. “We are setting the stage to bring the vibrant Twin Cities music scene to a new level of musicianship, artistry, and creativity in the season to come.”
Some of the most exciting dance events include the world premiere of Moulin Rouge — The Ballet by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (featuring Can-Can girls flown in from Paris), Clytemnestra — master artist Martha Graham’s only full-length work, some of the most exciting, leading-edge international work to be seen by British choreographers Wayne MacGregor and Akram Kahn, and the Minnesota debut of the company of one the most famous dancers in the world, the Suzanne Farrell Ballet, and her tribute show to Balanchine.
