Hanging Help

Dear Expert: Is there a guideline for hanging artwork at the right height? Sandy, Inver Grove Heights

A: Here are a few guidelines that will help get art at the right height. If you are hanging a picture above a piece of furniture like a sofa or a hall chest, first make sure it relates well in size and shape to the furniture below and that it is tall enough to be viewed at eye level when hung. You will want at least 4” between the furniture and the frame of the artwork and the height of the piece should end above your eye level. You want the artwork to be placed for optimal viewing when standing, yet still relate to the furniture beneath it without drawing attention to the space between the art and the furniture.
