Last Word on Bon Jovi Opening Act Mix-Up

In what we’ll assume (and ensure) is the last word on the recent dream-come-true performances for several local bands—opening for Bon Jovi—the manager of one of the bands, Select Three,  wrote in with his take on the KQRS contest that got them there. [To quickly rehash: The station’s contest to perform with JBJ initially resulted in fourforty and Alison Scott being named the winners. Scott was called the same day and informed that, in fact, Select Three was in instead. JBJ later saw to it that both acts, in addition to fourforty, got their time in his glow.]

“A representative from KQRS called me and told me they had made a huge mistake,” says Select Three manager Wally Schmelz. “Select Three had received the highest number of votes. Select Three had already conceded and sent Facebook messages to the winning bands to congratulate them. I know many may be very upset with the KQ representative who made the mistake, but I’m sure it was very difficult for him to admit it, and yet he still had the integrity to make things right. For that reason alone, I was impressed he would put his job on the line and admit the error.”

As it was, Schmelz says, Bon Jovi’s camp “really rolled out the red carpet,” spending a great deal of time with the youthful Select Three. “The members of Bon Jovi and their staff could not have been kinder or more unpretentious,” he says.
