The Hiawatha Light Rail Line was unveiled in the summer of 2004, with an expansion to the airport and Mall of America completing the $715 million project in December. The line runs 12 miles, starting in downtown Minneapolis’ lively Warehouse District, trekking southbound to Minnehaha Park and both the Lindbergh and Humphrey airport terminals, then on to the Mall of America for its final stop. For mall visitors, this means that downtown dinner, theater and nightlife is just a train ride away, and Minneapolis Metrodome or Target Center visitors can avoid heavier city traffic and take advantage of this fast, easy, inexpensive transit.
Riding the rails is easy. Purchase a rail pass at any automated teller machine located at each station. Round trip fare is $2 during rush hours (6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) and the train runs every 7.5 minutes. Off-peak and weekend fare is $1.50 with the train running every 10-15 minutes.
