“The patient is our top priority and the most important person at the clinic.”

As Obstetricians and Gynecologists we provide healthcare to women from adolescence, through the reproductive years, and beyond. Over the years, patients have informed us that they are the centers of influence for their families and businesses and need to remain in good health. They operate on the philosophy that when women are healthy, their families, businesses, and communities thrive.

Services include general obstetrics, gynecology, surgery, bone density testing, laboratory, and on-site accredited ultrasound service. The physicians are experienced in menopause, infertility, adolescent and young adult gynecology. All the physicians are Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Clinic Sofia has been a recipient of the Fairview Physicians Associate Award for overall customer satisfaction. The staff and physicians are dedicated to providing excellent healthcare services to women, and promoting balance in their patients’ personal lives.

“The patient is our top priority and the most important person at the clinic,” Dr. Block says. “We care for our patients as if they were a member of our own family.”

John A. Haugen Associates, P.A.

Jennifer Ambur, M.D.

“The most rewarding aspect of my job is empowering women through education.”

Jennifer Ambur, M.D., the newest doctor to join John A. Haugen Associates, is a natural fit within a team of dedicated medical professionals.

”The best professional advice I ever received was to take the time to sit down and really listen to my patients,” she says.

Her patients appreciate her laidback, easygoing bedside manner. When asked to describe her personality, she answers, “Calm under pressure.”

Specializing in total obstetric and gynecological care, Dr. Ambur’s main clinical interests include high-risk pregnancies, laparascopic surgery, adolescent medicine, and vulvar disease, although she is quick to point out that she enjoys every aspect of women’s health care.

“I enjoy interacting with women of all ages and backgrounds, tailoring each patient’s care to the individual woman,” she comments.

She obtained her medical degree from the University of Iowa, completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Rochester in New York, then moved to Oregon where she worked as an OB/GYN in private practice before joining the staff at a busy Portland hospital. She joined John A. Haugen Associates in February of 2007.

Whether coming in for care during or after pregnancy, an annual pap smear or breast exam, issues with menopause or birth control, or for minimally-invasive treatment or surgery, patients find the old-fashioned care and personalized service of John A. Haugen Associates to be comfortable and comforting.

Dr. Ambur is a welcome addition.

Minneapolis Vascular Physicians

Maria Gomes, M.D.

“Dr. Gomes is one of the rare physicians that has all the best attributes a doctor can offer. She is incredibly caring, compassionate, knowledgeable, and extremely skilled with her hands. Her patients adore her and she is fantastic to work with.”

-Scott R. Schultz, M.D., president of Minneapolis Radiology
Being a doctor is in Maria Gomes’ genes. Literally. She comes from a long line of doctors, following in the footsteps of her great grandfather, grandfather, and father.

She received her medical degree from Oporto University Medical School in her homeland of Portugal, then completed her residency and a fellowship in Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics before joining Minneapolis Radiology Associates in 2003.

Today Dr. Gomes specializes in minimally invasive, targeted treatments using radiology imaging.

She sees patients for conditions ranging from painful varicose veins, to spine fractures resulting from osteoporosis or cancer, to fibroids causing abnormal uterine bleeding. Using minimally invasive techniques, the procedures typically have less risk, less pain, and less recovery time when compared to open surgery. (They can often cost less, too.)

Dr. Gomes wants patients to realize there are many low-risk procedures that can help them feel better physically. “There’s so much we can do, given recent advances in technology,” she says.

When she speaks of her work, it’s obvious that she cares a great deal about her patients. She treats patients with respect and compassion, is incredibly knowledgeable, and is a fierce advocate for their best interests.

Dr. Gomes believes making a positive difference in people’s lives is one of the great privileges of being a doctor. This is the most gratifying aspect of her job.

She concludes, “It really is a gift to help people feel better.”

Physicians Neck and Back Clinics

Founders: Joseph A. Wegner, M.D.; Brian W. Nelson, M.D.; Charles E. Kelly, M.D.

“We give control back to our patients.”

Americans are being squeezed by rising health care costs, and the doctors at Physicians Neck and Back Clinics (PNBC) are offering a remedy.

“Our patients get better, longer-lasting outcomes for a lot less money,” explains Brian Nelson, M.D., orthopedic surgeon and medical director of PNBC. “And to prove it, we have published our results in several peer-reviewed medical journals. Our goal is to treat people once and then equip them to handle the problem on their own for the rest of their lives without the need to continuously re-enter the health care system.”

This is a win for patients, insurance companies, and employers. There are no temporary “quick fixes” at PNBC. Patients are taught spinal strengthening techniques through a sports medicine approach, techniques the patients can later continue at home.

“We give control back to our patients,” says Joe Wegner, M.D.

The program has been so successful that referrals from former patients account for the largest percentage of new patients.

Chuck Kelly, M.D., says patients with chronic, disabling neck and back problems—patients who have been frustrated with other treatments—are able make dramatic, life-changing improvements after treatment with PNBC.

“We specialize in treating patients that have failed many other treatments,” Kelly says.

All three dedicated, board-certified physicians agree that the best part of the job is educating patients, instilling hope where hope has been lost, watching their patients’ strength improve (and start feeling better), then discharging patients out into the world with a solid plan for a surgery-free, pain-free future.

Our mission: to enrich each patient’s quality of life through research and innovative methods of enhancing images.

Minnesota Eye Consultants has emerged as one of the premier refractive research and treatment centers in the nation. Its mission is to enrich each patient’s quality of life through research and innovative methods of enhancing images. Ophthalmologists and surgeons from throughout the world have been trained in revolutionary refractive procedures under the expert direction of its partners and physicians.

Its internationally recognized researchers were part of the team that gained the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for LASIK (laser-in-situ keratomilieus), a true medical breakthrough in modern history. They’ve trained 25 percent of the surgeons in America in LASIK technology, and continue to be active in the on-going research, training and development of the procedure. Minnesota Eye Consultant surgeons have performed more than 50,000 LASIK procedures.

One of the most advanced procedures available is an “intra ocular lens implant” for patients with presbyopia or cataracts. For those who have refractive errors outside the range treatable with LASIK, or that have cataract formation, removal of the natural lens of the eye and replacement with an intraocular lens (IOLs) may be helpful in reducing their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. This procedure is very similar to cataract surgery that is done for a cloudy lens, and the accuracy in obtaining the desired improvement is quite high. For some patients, multifocal lenses may be helpful in improving distance and near vision. Some patients may opt for distance vision in both eyes or monovision.

Minnesota Eye Consultants has four laser and refractive surgery centers in the Twin Cities and an expansive network of satellite offices and clinics in greater Minnesota.

The team includes doctors Richard L. Lindstrom, Thomas W. Samuelson, David R. Hardten, Elizabeth A. Davis, William J. Lipham, and Patrick J. Riedel. In addition to refractive procedures, they also perform cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

Skin Rejuvenation Clinic, P.A.

Dr. Elizabeth Hagberg and Dr. Mark Hagberg

“It’s so rewarding to see our patients’ confidence and self-esteem improve as their skin improves.”

The husband and wife owners of Skin Rejuvenation Clinic, P.A., Elizabeth Hagberg and Mark Hagberg, M.D., help people love their skin. Services at their Edina-based clinic can help reverse the effects of sun damage through laser treatments for brown spots, redness, fine lines and wrinkles, ultimately returning skin to its natural glow. They provide acne treatments, laser hair removal and injections such as Botox®, Restylane®, Radiesse® and JuvedermTM, which smooth fine to deep facial lines and folds. They also were among the first practices in the state to offer LipoDissolve, a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.

Patients trust Dr. Beth and Mark Hagberg’s knowledge, caring personalities, honest feedback, and excellent service. The board-certified physicians offer personal hands-on medical care in a nonsurgical medical setting, performing all injectable and facial laser procedures themselves to ensure the best care possible.

Both doctors received their medical diplomas from the University of Minnesota Medical School, completed their residencies in Duluth, and practiced medicine in Hawaii before returning to Minnesota. Dr. Beth has always had a special interest in skin care and cosmetic treatments, while Dr. Mark, throughout his medical career, has derived great satisfaction treating dermatological diseases and conditions. Together they opened Skin Rejuvenation Clinic, P.A. in 2005.

Complimentary consultations are offered to patients considering treatment.

“We provide each patient with a personalized plan to enhance their natural beauty,” Dr. Mark explains. “It’s a one-on-one chance to gain feedback.”

In addition to cosmetic medical care, the clinic offers aesthetician treatments, skin care and spa services, and sells prescription-strength skin care products, such as Obagi.

“It’s so rewarding to see our patients’ confidence and self-esteem improve as their skin improves,” Dr. Beth says. “We love helping people feel better about themselves. That’s what this business is all about.”
