The Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona features four galleries of world-class art and artifacts including Impressionism and Hudson River School paintings, marine art, regional folk art sculptures, and traveling exhibits. Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, the Museum is located in a unique, turn-of-the-century-style building and landscaped with over 60,000 native plants.
In May of 2009, a new gallery opened featuring over 60 world-renowned Impressionism and Hudson River School paintings including works by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Cole, Homer, and others. Other permanent collections include the Burrichter-Kierlin Marine Art Collection, considered one the largest, privately-owned marine art collections in North America; the Leo Smith Folk Art Collection, featuring whimsical original wood folk-art sculptures depicting life on the upper Mississippi River; and rare, historic river images by 1880’s photographer Henry Peter Bosse.
At any given time, only 20 to 25 percent of the museum’s total inventory is on display. The exhibits change frequently and include a variety of regional traveling displays.
The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is a family-friendly facility and hosts a variety of educational events and presentations for individuals of all ages. Children and their families are invited to participate in monthly art education experiences as well as discovery docks and the family reading area. Along with viewing frequent eagles and native wildlife, visitors can watch a working river harbor in action as barges and tugboats travel along the Mississippi River.
