Orange Crush

Like most women, I have strong feelings about make-up. That’s probably putting it lightly. There are things I can’t live without (gloss and undereye concealor) and things I would never wear – orange anything being one of them. I do sheer reds in fall/winter and transition to pinks and nudes in spring/summer. Nowhere in either palette does orange factor in. It’s the surest way to turn my skin sallow. So I blanched last summer when shades of orange crush were the focus of so many collections. Even the models who wore them on their eyes/lips/cheeks looked about as natural as the Popsicle color.

Thankfully, the trend took a softer turn this year. Coral is big, and it’s got just enough pink to add warmth – not a dusting of Cheetos. I started small, with a poppy-colored pedicure, and then discovered Stila’s new Mandarin color collection (I’m not brand-loyal, but Stila makes the silkiest eye shadow and particularly flattering shades ofeverything). All three products are perfection. They’ve got just enough color to warm up my olive (read: green) complexion, but don’t scream sunkist. I swirl the cheek duo for a really subtle, glowy bronze. I use all three of the eye colors. And the lip glaze is the thing I would save if my clutch were on fire.
