Many designers will tell you that the fireplace is the heart of a room. It’s where we all gather around on cozy, winter evenings, reading a good book or enjoying each other’s company.
Minnepaolis-based designer, Laura Ramsey Engler of Ramsey Engler Ltd. and her team had the opportunity to work on classic Calcutta marble fireplace placed in her client’s master bedroom.
Laura recently shared her sketchbook with us, giving photos and insight into the process and all the hands it took to create such a stunning piece:
“Working on the process of new construction in collaboration with Erotas Building Corp., we got involved at a point where we could detail all the interior features such as fireplaces. We had a concept for a classic Calcutta marble fireplace surround, but wanted to dictate the specific design motifs as well as the dimensionality and projection.”
“We started with concept photos, then worked on site where I drew an actual scale design for the relief of the mantelpiece on the floor adjacent to the roughed in firebox. This was then reviewed by the general contractor, Erotas, and we all worked in collaboration with the fabricator to convey the design details. The fabricator then provided drawings for review as shown in attachements.”

“The resulting fireplace is one-of-a-kind in a very serene master suite.”
