This year’s AIA MN Homes By Architects Tour features five homes nestled along the scenic St. Croix River – two new and two remodels.
Originally a 19th century cottage, Home #19 was entirely remodeled by SALA Architects by incorporating contemporary elements while maintaining the home’s history. “We merged old with new,” explained architect Katherine Hillbrand. “I loved working with a client who valued and amplified the core ideas behind the tangible expression of the design,” she stated.

Inspired by its location on the St. Croix River, John P. Kalmon Architect created Home #20 with an emphasis on design, sustainability and utility in response to the lifestyle of the owners. Extraordinary views of the river can be enjoyed from nearly every living space in the home.

David Heide Design Studio took on Homes #21 and #22, two distinctly different houses with owners that shared the same vision: remodel and expand space. Originally built in the 1950s, Home #21 was a small cabin renovated to preserve the timeless cabin lifestyle. Owners of Home #22 also wanted to maintain the original architecture of the 1970s ranch house. “The main goal for both homes was to make being on the river the experience and not living in the house the experience,” explained Architect Mark Nelson.

What was once a small, family-built house and garage has made way for the new Home #23 SALA Architects. By request of the owner, traditional elements and characteristics of the former home were embodied in the new design. “I feel this house, like the others, tells a story about a site, a client, and the process of design and architecture,” stated architect Wayne Branum.
