Theater, concerts, exhibits & more—your best bets for August

Opening August 6

Robert Irwin: Slant/Light/Volume

Commissioned by the Walker Art Center when its now-old building opened in 1971, this ethereal installation hasn’t been displayed since 1989. It’s simple enough—a translucent span of scrim fabric slanted at a 45-degree angle. But the work, lit with floodlights, plays with light and space in a pleasing, transformative way, making something—like the best art—out of nothing. Orchestra Hall, 1111 Nicollet Mall, Mpls., 612-371-5656, mnorch.org

August 28 and 29

Kelly Rossum Quartet Farewell Weekend

“Inventive trumpeter leaving for NYC” is how these shows are billed, but that scarcely scratches the surface. The mohawked Rossum is an irreverent, take-no-prisoners presence in the sometimes stuffy modern-jazz scene and in leading the jazz program at the MacPhail Center for Music. He, and his hair, will be missed. Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant, 1010 Nicollet Ave., Mpls., 612-332-1010, dakotacooks.com

Roxanne Jackson

Minneapolis sculptor Roxanne Jackson may be our Young British Artist, at least in style, her macabre forms (that would fit well in developer Ralph Burnet’s collection) combine animal and human parts to explore our mutual instincts and desires. Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 2400 Third Ave. S., Mpls., 612-642-2787, artsmia.org

Franconia Sculpture Park is one of the state’s great roadside attractions, full of quirky, soulful works from across the world.
