This past Sunday, May 22, a tornado tore through north Minneapolis, putting hundreds of people out of their homes, leaving them without shelter, food, or the basic necessities that we so often take for granted. There are many ways to help with the recovery efforts. Here are a few:
KMOJ radio station, located at the intersection of West Broadway and Penn Avenue North, is collecting such donations as clothing, blankets, bottled water, non-perishable food items, and any other items you think would be of help. (Immediately needed are candles as many are without power.) Note: exit routes off I-94 are closed; take Olson Memorial Highway to Penn Avenue and follow it to West Broadway.
Urban Homeworks is organizing volunteers who want to donate their time to help with clean up. Or you can donate work gloves and trash bags; drop them at KMOJ Radio Station (see above).
Minnesota Helps: North Minneapolis Recovery Fund is accepting monetary contributions.
The Salvation Army is also encouraging monetary donations, as well as collecting donations of nonperishable food items, hygiene products, and diapers at the 2024 Lyndale Avenue North location. Used clothing and furniture donations are being accepted at The Salvation Army Donation Center at 900 North Fourth Street.
