Tree Selection

Dear Expert: I am looking to purchase the perfect tree for my yard, but I am having trouble deciding what kind of tree I want. How do I find the best tree for me?

A. Tree selection can feel like an overwhelming task. You may have the size or shape of a tree in mind but are unsure which tree species to select. Or, it may be a problem site, such as a wet area that is your concern. The decision can seem a complex, time-consuming process, but it doesn’t have to be. Landscape professionals are horticultural specialists who can steer you towards trees that will thrive in local conditions. When purchasing a tree, be prepared to tell your plant professional what the site and soil conditions are where you’re planning to plant. You may also want to let them know if there are any special features you’d like the tree to have such as color, size, or ornamental flowers and fruit.
