President’s Letter

Dear Friends,
Please join us Friday, December 1st through Sunday, December 3rd, at the Minneapolis Convention Center for Winter Market, the largest fundraiser of the Junior League of Minneapolis. Winter Market offers three days of premier shopping and special events. We call it “Turning Buying Into Giving!”

Proceeds earned at this event benefit the Twin Cities community. The Junior League of Minneapolis is an organization of committed volunteers who work together to identify unmet needs in the community, forge effective coalitions and work for change. Our purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. We have served this community for over eight decades.

Our largest project, Books 4 Kids, aims to collect 35,000 books this spring to distribute directly into the hands of 10,000 at-risk children by summer 2007. This book drive along with our concurrent reading program aims to inspire a passion for books and reading among children in our community. In addition to Books 4 Kids, our other projects include: Breakfast Buddies, Dine, Dish and Discover, and Smart Cents.

Thank you for shopping and supporting our local community projects. Join us at our seventh annual Winter Market and help us to build a better community!

Fondly,
Meleah Follen

Current JLM Projects

Dine, Dish and Discover (3D)

Dine, Dish and Discover, also known as 3D, is a leadership development program targeted for girls ages 13-18 at Perspectives, Inc., a non-profit human service agency helping homeless and at-risk families establish healthy and independent lifestyles. Curriculum topics include: Team Building, Leadership, Creativity, Envisioning Change, and Group Process Skills. Each topic is the focus of a weekly seminar, where JLM facilitators lead games and activities. During the year, the girls are challenged to put their new skills to work by selecting, planning, and participating in a community service project that they execute in the spring.

Books 4 Kids

Books 4 Kids has a book drive and reading program to support its mission to give at-risk children in Minneapolis books to keep and provide them with opportunities to come together and read. In 2005, Books 4 Kids gave more than 33,000 books to kids in Minneapolis, and in 2006 almost 40,000 books were distributed. Beginning in 2006, a reading program was established that provided opportunities for kids and parents to read together in conjunction with Books 4 Kids recipient organizations.

Breakfast Buddies

The JLM supports St. Louis Park Junior High School by providing volunteers to serve as role models for adolescent girls. Once a month, our volunteers eat breakfast and engage in activities that promote teamwork, career development, and identification of role model attributes. Volunteers interact with the girls and discuss future opportunities and interests, in order to help build their esteem.

Smart Cents

“What do you mean I’m broke? I still have checks!” Smart Cents is a dynamic and interactive financial literacy program that teaches young women in our community the basics of budgeting, spending and saving. The program mission is to develop and execute an interactive program focused on banking basics and the essentials of sound personal, financial management using an established curriculum. Through this program, students learn financial literacy skills not taught in typical school curriculums.

Current JLM Services Include:

Helping Hands:

“Work Gloves, not White Gloves,” is the motto of this JLM service designed to support community agencies and JLM projects past and present with done-in-a-day projects.

LeagueAires: The LeagueAires are trained in music therapy and bring the joy of music to children, the elderly and the physically and mentally disabled.

Community Support

The JLM could not continue its mission without the support of its members and the community it serves. The JLM’s work is supported by membership dues, grants and gifts, and its fundraisers including Winter Market and the American Girl Fashion Shows.
