Spring is about to be here in full force, thanks to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
Shed your mittens, coats, and winter woes this week for a four-day festival of fresh flowers and fine art. The 30th annual Art in Bloom is back in the gallery for a long weekend of flowering works of art—for free.
Art in Bloom exhibits selected works of art from the MIA’s permanent collection and pairs them with the matching floral interpretation by both commercial florists and individual flower artists. The signature work this year is the new digital installation 6QUEJ5 by Jennifer Steinkamp. Steinkamp, a contemporary video artist who also created Hurdy Gurdy Man (Chrysanthemums), will present her work in the Pillsbury Auditorium opening day.
An additional 150 artists will also be on display through Sunday, with lectures, floral demos, and more activities all weekend long. For the night owls, check out Flowers After Hours, a flower-power party held Thursday night with a cash bar and performances by guitarist Pavel Jany and Minneapolis jazz trio The Talking Strings.
Bring the whole family on Saturday morning for crafts, performances by student musicians from Madeline Island School of Music, and other family-friendly activities.
Even Mother Nature can’t deny us this slice of spring.
