The Jonathan Adler home emporium has opened in Uptown, and I could not be more excited. His mix of midcentury modern and Hollywood Regency, iced with a little Carnaby Street, somehow still comes off as clean, preppy, and coherent. He’s taken the best of it all and amped up the design to make it modern and fresh, not schizophrenic.
I’ve long admired Adler’s pottery, then his expansion into furniture and other home décor. Plus, my design philosophy jibes with his: he insists that color and humor are just as chic as a classic beige room. (He actually wrote a coffee-table book called My Prescription for Anti-Depressive Living.) You can see how well it works when you shop his collection in person, rather than online or piece-by-piece at another boutique.
You’re going to spend some dough to get the goods ($168 for a piggy bank; $98 for needlepoint pillowcase) but can you really put a price on happiness? I think not.
