Get Creative

Gülgün Kayim wants Minneapolis to be a more “creative city”—more lively, more unique, more conducive to creative industries. We’d like to hear your ideas.

Gülgün Kayim is the new Director of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy for Minneapolis—a position newly created at City Hall to help the city attract more artists, more creative industries, more tourism, and generally become a more attractive place to live.

She has her thoughts: “I’m from London, so to me a creative city is about great public spaces, valuing playfulness and beauty as much as utility, and celebrating the things that make it unique.” And she has some ideas: “We can do zoning differently to allow more restaurants to spill out onto sidewalks, create more live/work spaces for artists, and allow more businesses to flourish at the sidewalk level.” (She’s of two minds about the skyways.)

How about you? What does a “creative city” mean to you? And what would you do to make Minneapolis one? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
