After 36 years of creative performances and community engagement at The Avalon Theatre in Minneapolis, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (HOBT) is turning a new page in its 50-year history. The beloved organization, known for its magical puppetry and educational programming, will soon move to a new, more accessible location that will allow it to expand its offerings and deepen its connection with the Twin Cities community.
“We are excited to create a space that not only fosters creative empowerment but also meets the needs of the broader community,” says Elina Kotlyar, HOBT’s Interim Executive Director. The new location will feature accessible performance venues, a dedicated workshop space for puppet-making and artist collaboration, and a puppet library that will continue to serve as a resource for both budding puppeteers and seasoned artists.
Since its humble beginnings in a church basement, HOBT has always prioritized inclusivity, creativity, and education. With this move, the organization plans to create sensory-friendly spaces, offer after-school programs, camps, and storytelling events, and maintain its long-standing tradition of puppetry performances that have enchanted audiences for decades.
HOBT’s new space will also be more accessible, with features like wheelchair-friendly entrances, easy access to public transportation, and ample parking. These improvements will help the organization reach even more people, from local school groups to families, artists, and community members.
Pre-Move Programming: A Winter of Creativity and Fun
While preparations for the big move are underway, Heart of the Beast is staying active with a full slate of programming around the Twin Cities. From puppet-making workshops to storytime events, there’s no shortage of opportunities for creative expression this winter. Here are a few upcoming events:
- Puppet-Making Workshop at Midtown Global Market (Nov. 21, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.)—Join artist Chelly Beaver for a crankie-making workshop.
- Puppet Library (First and third Saturdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.)—Explore the puppet library and participate in hands-on activities.
- Winter Solstice Lantern Procession (Dec. 21)—Bring your handmade lantern and join the procession to Powderhorn Park lake, accompanied by local musicians and food.
- Storytime at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Dec. 8) and at the St. Paul Library (Dec. 14, 21, and 28).
Additionally, HOBT is working with schools, community centers, and local organizations on private events, including mask-making residencies, after-school puppet-making at Little Earth housing complex, and more.
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for HOBT
“The move is not just about a new building; it’s about enhancing our ability to serve the community with programming that reflects the diversity and creativity of the Twin Cities,” says Rachel Beaver-Scott, Puppet Librarian and Storyteller at HOBT. “We’re thrilled to be part of a larger, inclusive space where people of all ages can come together, explore new ideas, and share in the joy of puppetry.”
