Hot Air

The quest for sleek, smooth tresses or luxurious, bouncy curls has gotten one blowdry bar easier in the Twin Cities. Gust-o has been open for a couple of months, but I finally got a chance to cruise over to the Excelsior Boulevard location right before the holidays (just outside Uptown, in the complex with Moss Envy, Whole Foods, and the like.)

The super-bright, ultra-girly pink-and-orange shotgun-style space owned by Kacey Pohlad and Betsy Hawn is nicely appointed, and the shop carries Oribe and Living Proof products on its shelves. Shampoo stations come with a pouf to kick your feet up while you get a wash. You choose from a menu of styles, including updos and ponytails, and Gust-o also provides makeup services, should you need them.

My appointment was great—you can see the results for yourself. It was speedy, but not rushed. I especially liked the Living Proof Prime product my stylist used, which helps repel dirt and hang onto your style—I could tell a difference with how my hair looked on day three as far as cleanliness was concerned. But I also wonder if it weighed my hair down a bit, as the style fell a little flat by the end of the night. (I got the blowout in the morning; a simple flip upside-down and maybe some quick teasing could probably have solved the problem easily enough.)

I find something so soothing about getting a blowout. It’s as much about the good hair as it is about relaxing for me. And if you live in the Calhoun Commons area, it’s a great location. (And should you ever find yourself in need of a blowout in Boston, the sister salon is there.)
