J.W. Hulme Co. has been making fine leather and canvas bags since 1905, when founder and namesake John Willis Hulme sewed each bag by hand. The Minnesota heritage brand, which has a company store and factory in St. Paul, made national headlines following a 2010 article in Wall Street Journal that chronicled its near-shuttering during the financial crisis of the mid-2000s, before it got the attention of NYC fashion designer Steven Alan and was picked up by Barneys New York.
Each handcrafted bag is created in St. Paul from small craft tanneries in Minnesota, as well as Maine, Illinois, and Tennessee, with leathers tanned from age-old dying and finishing techniques that highlight the full grain, color variances, and natural imperfections of each hide. Each bag comes with a lifetime guarantee as a testament to its craftsmanship.
This fall, the brand has continued its tastemakers series (which spotlighted Minnesota makers and influencers in 2014 and 2015 editions) for its fall 2017 catalog, going on location to Portland, Maine, to showcase the people and places that personify the brand’s spirit of tradition, craftsmanship, and adventure. The catalog highlights the brand’s fall collection, which launched this week. The line showcases the luxurious leathers and classic tailoring for which the brand is celebrated.
The new collection expands to include updated, fashion-forward pieces that emphasize flexible use and personalization. The Harper Mini Bag ($295) is a clutch with a removable strap that transitions it into a crossbody. The Lyndale Backpack ($595) transforms a casual style into a luxe, on-the-go accessory. The Striped Shoulder Strap ($95), available in eight color combinations, can be added to any J.W. Hulme Co. shoulder bag for a sporty, updated look, and the Pom Charm ($65, available in brown beaver fur and cream shearling) can be clipped to any bag. Plus, all of the products come with a complimentary monogram.
At the same time, the collection doesn’t stray far from its roots. The collection features several pieces inspired by a vintage travel bag from the J.W. Hulme Co. archives, as well as several classic J.W. Hulme Co. silhouettes that have been updated in on-trend shades, such as evergreen, navy, and blush, and given solid brass hardware. Others have been covered in plaid Woolrich flannel (the Classic Tote Bag) or given a floral lining (the Legacy Handbag).

Hulme Co. factory store (678 7th St. W., St Paul), and find select pieces at Twin Cities retailers MartinPatrick3 in the North Loop, BlackBlue in St. Paul, Brightwater Clothing & Gear in Excelsior, and the Uptown Minnesota store at MSP International Airport.
