Lip Service

So, at a recent photo shoot, my girl crush Fatima Olive suggested the most perfect lip product. And it sort of defies traditional descriptions, which is probably why it’s got such a long name: CoverGirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balm. And that’s pretty much what you’re getting. I’ve been obsessively reapplying the Peony shade since the shoot, and people have complimented the effect quite a few times.

So here’s why I love it:

1. The formulation: it includes mango and shea butter, so it feels soothing, like Chapstick.  That’s not easy to do. So even though it has a soft shine, it looks more like lipstick than lip gloss. (I’m really more of a lipstick kind of girl.)  That takes me to the next point.

2. The color! True to the stick itself, although more sheer. Lots of colors from which to choose—wines to nudes to pinks. Layer it on for more intensity.

3. NatureLuxe is a slightly better step in the direction of more natural ingredients in mass-market cosmetics.

4. It is totally affordable. It will run you about $7, and it goes on sale sometimes (at least at Target), plus sometimes I find coupons in the Sunday paper. (Yeah, I said it: coupons. I bought this myself, and I use ’em.)

And now for this weekend:

The Hive Salon is celebrating its first anniversary in Northeast, and they are throwing one heck of a bash with Mighty Swell, Findfurnish, and more. Expect awesome vintage clothing and barware, complimentary retro hair and makeup touchups, a huge raffle with amazing prizes (bring healthy, non-perishable items and score a few tickets!), drinks and snacks, a juice bar, music, and more. Seriously. This is my idea of fun. April 15, 12 noon to 6 p.m., 400 NE Lowry Ave., Mpls., 612-781-4483

The Ballet of the Dolls presents its third annual Fashion Ball at the Ritz Theater. I can tell you from personal experience it will be a sight to behold. if you need a little more fashion, check out Envision: Artopia at the Graves Hotel on Saturday night. Ignite models will strut their stuff in local designs from the likes of Amanda Christine, CounterCouture, Gina Marie Vintage, Jennifer Merchant, Larissa Loden and more. A silent auction and other proceeds will benefit Free Arts MN. Cocktails, 8 p.m., show starts at 9. $25-$75. 601 1st Ave. N., Mpls.

Artcrank is also Saturday night! (Oh, there’s so much good stuff this weekend.) Mingle with more than 40 local artists, buy some local art (for $40 a pop!I have a favorite print from two years ago at my house), listen to The Current and Mayda, drink some Widmer Brothers craft beer (and get a take-home pint glass). There’s also a group ride planned for those who wish to partake. Free! 5:30 p.m.-11 p.m. Traffic Zone Gallery, 250 3rd Ave. N., Mpls.

Hope to see you out and about this weekend!
