Mighty Good Shopping (And Mighty Good Deeds)

The Mighty Swell ladies have been kicking their occasional shop into high gear over the last few weeks, first with the Hive Salon anniversary event, then the darling Summer of Dresses kickoff (I’m so excited this is back this year, with a newly redesigned, shiny site. I wrote about them last year and together with Wing Ta of Canary Grey, we photographed some of the most fervent followers.) Anyway, they’re hosting a ladies’ spring sale Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 5 p.m. I’ve missed the last couple so I’m really hoping to head over this weekend to check it out. I had my wisdom teeth removed this week and I think the tooth fairy needs to make an appearance…

Next week, mark your calendars to shop for a cause. On Wednesday, May 9, you can shop for affordable art and help someone in need. The event is called Art 4 Shelter, and the proceeds benefit Simpson Housing Services. Simpson works to shelter the homeless and provide other services and advocacy work to get people back to a stable place, squarely on their feet. Here’s how the event works—I love this concept: You get in for free and enjoy free wine and snacks. Then, you buy super-affordable original art—all 5×7 size, on paper, for just $30!—created by more than 1,000 artists. (The lipstick piece, upper right, was one of my favorites in the little preview I received…for obvious reasons.) Each piece is signed on the back, so you later find out if it’s someone famous, or someone who’s about to be! I see quite a few that I could imagine hanging in my house. Preview work from 5 to 7 p.m., then buy it up from 7 to 9 p.m. Burnet Gallery, Le Meridien Chambers Hotel, 901 Hennepin Ave., Mpls.
