The 38th Street Cultural District showcases the city’s rich cultural tapestry and historical significance. This neighborhood has long been a focal point for African American culture and community in Minneapolis.

In recent years, the district has gained international recognition as the site of George Floyd Square, a powerful memorial and gathering space that has become a symbol of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality. The district’s resilience, activism, and spirit of unity are palpable as you walk its streets, witnessing the harmonious coexistence of long-standing establishments, new innovative ventures, and spaces for reflection and social change.

Head west down 38th Street and you’ll find Tacos el Kevin, a market and taco shop that brings the vibrant flavors of Mexico to the neighborhood. Further west, over to Nicollet Avenue, you’ll find an intersection packed with dining options—Petite León, Kyatchi, Nighthawks Diner and Bar, Boludo, Abang Yoli, and Cocina Latina.

Where to Experience Art

At the heart of this artistic expression in the 38th Street Cultural District is George Floyd Square, which has become an ever-evolving open-air gallery. The square features a powerful collection of murals, sculptures, and interactive art installations that honor George Floyd’s memory and amplify the call for social justice. While you’re at George Floyd Square, be sure to stop in Listen 2 Us Studio, an art gallery and media studio “documenting our history for posterity”.

Beyond George Floyd Square, the Phelps Park basketball court is more than just a place for sports; the court features a mural that is based on honoring the positive spirit of the community and economic inclusion. The Pillsbury House and Theatre serves as a cultural cornerstone, offering thought-provoking performances and community programs that engage and inspire.
