After shuttering her St. Louis Park women’s designer boutique OPM last spring, owner Susan Sun had promised to relocate once she found the perfect location. She’s made good on that promise with Equation, a new lifestyle store that expands on Sun’s signature edgy-luxe sensibilities to include everything from wardrobe to the home.
After a successful test run with a temporary location at Edina’s 50th and France shopping district last fall, Sun and business partner Jamie Carl jumped at the chance to stay in the neighborhood when the space formerly belonging to MINQ boutique opened up.
Carl, who spent many years as a buyer, marketer, and business analyst for Target, had been planning to open her own vintage home accessories and gift shop until she and Sun decided to join forces. The store’s name was inspired by Sun’s three children (whose initials form the equation “E=mc2”), and also references the seamless fusion of the pair’s respective styles.
The boutique carries OPM favorites such as Helmut Lang, Smythe, and Current/Elliott denim, plus sleek leather handbags by British designer Sophie Hulme, supple knits from 360 Sweater, footwear by NYC’s Yosi Samra, and edgy-yet-elegant jewelry from Toronto’s Jenny Bird and Minnesota’s own Tess & Tricia. Carl’s contributions include a mix of vintage and vintage-inspired gifts and housewares, including Marie Todd candles, bug-embossed notecards by Betsywhite Stationery, and tea towels, candles, and glassware—including gold-skull shot glass sets—from quirky-cool brand Spitfire Girl. All in all, it’s a winning formula. equationmn.com
