For the sixth year running, 2,000 crustacean-loving fans headed to Smack Shack in the North Loop for the Crayfest 2018 block party on August 4. The boil included crayfish, andouille sausage, corn, and potatoes. To wash down the crawdads, beverages were in ample supply—including New Orleans “hurricane” cocktails and pints from Fulton, Modist, Fair State, and Sociable Cider Werks. Davina and the Vagabonds, Steeling Dan, Appetite for Zaccardi, Viva Knievel, and Cuba Libre performed throughout the day. Joe Hillenbrand from Minneapolis crushed the most crustaceans to win the annual crayfish-eating contest and walked away with $500.
