Picky Girl is closing. I just named Picky Girl one of the best boutiques in the Twin Cities. We will be missing an important part of the St. Paul shopping landscape in two weeks. I’m disappointed as a style editor, and sad as a shopper, that her doors will soon close. Starting today, merchandise and select fixtures and furniture will be 30 percent off. (I hope to stop by tonight.) Picky Girl is slated to officially close at 2 p.m. on October 29, but may close earlier, depending on inventory remaining, so call ahead, if you’re wondering.
Owner Elizabeth Varghese let me know this was no easy decision, and that she will miss her Grand Avenue location. But here’s the silver lining. She’ll now be the head buyer Details Salon in downtown St. Paul. Varghese told me to expect about half the space, but that many of the same familiar local and national lines will make an appearance.
One of the things that made Picky Girl what it was was Varghese herself. Her honest-but-kind opinions and always-helpful, never-pushy suggestions for add-ons or styling were appreciated by her customers. To that end, she will still be available for private shopping appointments and “Picky Parties,” shopping events that will now include salon services as well!
Unfortunately, this is the way of the current economy. I’m so thankful that Varghese has found a middle ground. But let this be (yet another, sad) warning: Not all shopkeepers will be so lucky. If you love our local boutiques, and value our unique style, please support them.
