Who: Mary Runge, seamstress.

The Story: Mary was nominated in Minnesota Monthly’s online makeover contest by her bride-to-be daughter, Cecilia. “My mom puts so much energy into being a mom,” Cecilia says. “Her own style took a backseat while she made sure that I was dressed in the latest trends.” Mary even returned to work to help Cecilia save for her big day. “Like always, she was motivated by love. She’s the sweetest, most selfless soul,” Cecilia says.

Style Inspiration: Oprah’s luxe look

Our Stylist’s Take:  “By the time we were done, Mary had dropped two dress sizes and lost years off her face. She was red-carpet fancy; we wanted Cecilia to be proud of her. We achieved all facets of the makeover: self-esteem, comfort, style, trend. I call this ‘mother-of-the-bride meets sophisticated chic.’”

Word to the Wise: Burgundy is hot for fall, and it’s also a complementary color on a blue-eyed blonde.

Last Looks: Mary’s impression of the makeover moved her to tears. “I didn’t know I could be this pretty. I feel like a different person!”
