Sometimes I think I was a flapper in another life. The fringe dresses and long pearls. The finger-waved hair and red lipstick. And the long, graceful cigarette holders (not that I would ever inhale). Maybe that’s why I love Chicago even though Renee Zellweger drives me batty, and why I think that tomorrow night’s Retrorama event at the Minnesota History Center sounds like the perfect party.
This celebration of depression era fashion and culture is the excuse I need to troll through my favorite vintage shops for a costume I actually want to wear. The MN Fashion-sponsored event features a vintage-inspired runway show produced by Anna Lee (who also practices reiki and makes divine hats. these uber-creative types just kill me), pop-up shops from Swank Retro and Via’s Vintage Wear, tips on old-school entertaining from Chowgirls catering, and cocktails by the mix masters at Bradstreet Craftshouse Restaurant. If you can pry your fingers from that gin gimlet, do take a swing to the foot-stomping tunes of A Night in the Box. Because once the clock strikes midnight, all flappers must return to their decidedly glamorous 21st century lives.
