Review: FGI's Summer Breeze Fashion Show

It isn’t summer in Minneapolis without a poolside fashion show.

Well-heeled attendees, dressed in their poolside best, converged at the Calhoun Beach Club’s rooftop deck on Tuesday night for Summer Breeze, FGI (Fashion Group International) of Minneapolis-St. Paul’s annual poolside fashion show. Hosts Sarah Edwards and Richard Anderson gave life to the proceedings—Anderson’s humorous, witty quips and entertaining interactions with the models gave the event just the right amount laidback, not-taking-ourselves-too-seriously fun.

On the runway, boho-chic reigned. Maxi dresses, fringe, sheer fabrics, and colorful, Southwestern prints were the order of the day. Bold, stunning necklaces by local designer Gretchen Ventura nearly stole the show—making the statement that a poolside look isn’t complete without in-your-face accessories.

Elsewhere, classic black and white looks proved minimalism is a great way to look effortless and chic for the summer.

No itty-bitty string bikinis here—the swimwear look of the season is chicer and higher-waisted and covered-up than ever (without looking frumpy or old-fashioned), as evidenced by swimwear from Tommy Bahama, which apparently has gone through a much-needed modern update.

One of the show’s standouts was a summer capsule collection by local designer Gina Moorhead of House of Gina Marie: A series of striped seersucker skirts transformed into casual-chic tent dresses with the twist of a bow.

The guys opted for dapper, lightweight suits with colorful accessories (and even more colorful shoes, thanks to the bright-soled kicks from local footwear brand Greenwich Vintage) from local shops Atmosfere, Heimie’s Haberdashery, and Macho + Metro.
