“So Simple, Even a Husband Can Do It!”

Judging from this pair of 1920s-era advertisements for General Mills products (one featuring the choleric character Ernest McGroucher), husbands of the era were perceived as unskilled cooks rescued from their ineptitude by from-the-mix pancakes and biscuits. Both images appear in Tempt Me: The Fine Art of Minnesota Cooking by Kathryn Strand Koutsky and Linda Koutsky, a book of vintage food packaging, cookbooks, and ads from the 1880s to the 1980s. The collection includes period recipes, histories of the Minnesota food industry, and the luscious paintings and illustrations on seed packages and catalogues.
