Spa Week

When I started this blog, I never intended or expected to write so much on beauty. It’s partly a spring thing, partly the product junkie in me, but mostly the draw of life’s little luxuries. Take the “lipstick effect,” a theory I first read about in the WSJ. Basically, lipstick sales go up as the economy heads south. There’s empirical evidence to support this trend, but it also just makes good sense. Lipstick (or gloss, in my case) is the ultimate feel-good item, without the expense of clothing, shoes, handbags . . .

This week presents another guilt-free opportunity to treat yourself. It’s Spa Week in Minnesota – a brilliant concept had surprisingly eluded me until recently. During Spa Week (April 16-22), participating spas offer three treatments, typically $100-350 mind you, for only $50. It’s the perfect way for spas to showcase their fabulous services and for you to experience them while supporting local businesses. I had a facial at FiveTwoSix SalonSpa in Saint Paul and would be remiss if I did not tell you that Kindra made my day. Even without the afterglow, I would’ve been content to spend the afternoon in this gorgeous urban space, amidst the collection of local art and photography.

All MN Spa Week participants are listed and linked below. Call, run, relax, and please – report back.

p.s. Here’s another good thing: Virgin Island Water, the new men’s and women’s fragrance from Creed. The scent is tropical, but not in a suntan lotion kind of way. It’s coconut and citrus and exactly what I’m craving now that the snow has melted (for other spring scents check out the current issue of MNMO or click here). But here’s the kicker: a portion of proceeds from U.S. sales benefit the Natural Resources Defense Council. Smell good, do good. Available at Neiman’s!
