The Need for Nautical

When the temps hit 90, the sun is blazing, you’re lounging on a beach or a boat, the smell of charcoal and slowly roasting food drifting over you as you read your favorite magazine, you’re probably wearing stripes, and maybe some navy blue or rocking some red lipstick and a topknot. No? Just me? I didn’t think so. There’s just something about midsummer that makes even the most cynical of us give in and have some maritime fun with our wardrobes. (It should be noted that I wear navy blue stripes year-round. I’m starting to consider it a signature, rather than a passing phase.) But the Fourth of July week somehow gives me permission to embrace my preppy, nautical side.

This year, I know of three fashionable ladies (our blogger Fatima, my best friend Cindy, and me) who are in love with my pick this week. It’s from our favorite cheap-chic retailer, Target. This black-and-white striped maxi skirt by Mossimo (it also comes in a royal blue and a pink-and-red stripe, I believe) is one for the books. When I saw Fatima wearing it, I demanded to know where it came from so I could have one. Then Cindy called me to tell me about the find. Yep, three’s a trend. It’s the perfect length, it drapes nicely, it keeps you cool but looking hot. I have paired mine with a white boyfriend T (also from Mossimo, for $8!) and long gold chains and gold floral flat sandals, but really, there’s just about…oh, nothing that it won’t go with in your wardrobe. For $18! It’s one of those pieces that I’m considering buying two or more of, because it’s just perfection.

So there you go—enjoy your weekend. In stripes. I salute you.
