True Champion

Shannon McKenzie fights tirelessly for animal rights. But she needs a wardrobe that conveys her passion and knowledge.

WHO: Shannon McKenzie, 37, founder and executive director of Underdog Rescue (underdogrescuemn.com)

QUANDARY: I wear my “Underdog Rescue” sweatshirt and jeans every day. I need a wardrobe that shows I mean business when I meet with legislators, but I also want that wardrobe to be evening appropriate for dates and nights out.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: It looks like me, just dressier!

GRANT’S TAKE: Shannon needs comfortable, dressy clothing that will take her from the capitol to a night out on the town. She’s petite, so we kept that in mind when choosing her wardrobe. But even petite people can wear bold, architectural details to make a big impression.

SHANNON’S CONCLUSION: For me, it’s all about comfort. These outfits look great—but they’re also comfortable. I know that I could incorporate these looks on a daily basis. I love that the clothing is all sourced from local shops—it’s important to me to shop locally and know I could stop in and pick up some great new things.

WHERE TO GET IT

THE OUTFIT: Black shirtdress, $575, from Grethen House, 4930 France Ave., Edina, 952-926-8725, grethenhouse.com; Iolite necklace, $675, by Ann Lambrecht, annlambrecht.com; Belt, $320, from Grethen House; Martin Margiela shoes, $775, from Grethen House.

BEFORE: This is Shannon’s daily uniform (right)—jeans, boots, Underdog Rescue gear.

AFTER: This necklace commands attention without overpowering the ensemble or her frame.

A shirtdress is a classic, classy choice for a power lunch or night out. The tailoring creates a flattering silhouette, and the wide belt not only creates shape but also adds visual interest.

These shoes may be black, but the design is anything but basic. The style creates a vertical line that lengthens the leg.
