The University of Minnesota Dance Team, considered one of the best teams in the nation for nearly two decades and extremely competitive to make, placed first again this weekend at the Universal Dance Association College Dance Team National Championship in Florida. Videos of the team’s performances are going viral on social media, TikTok, and YouTube.

The team’s routine to the song “Dream On” by Aerosmith in the preliminary jazz round was a direct tribute to the team’s performance to the same song 20 years ago when the group began its dynasty as double national champions. The team placed second overall in its division in the jazz category on Sunday in Orlando but took first place in the pom category. Ohio State took first place in the jazz category.

Dance team fans and U of M boosters nationwide, including Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on X, commented on the routine and applauded the 24 Minnesota student athletes for their precision and success.

“For one dancer to be able to execute some of these skills would be one thing, but for the entire team of athletes to flawlessly execute them—all while in perfect unison—is a whole new level of excellence the dance world hasn’t seen before,” explains local choreographer and dance instructor Katelyn Bloomquist, who is also editor of Midwest Home.
